A few days ago (before we stopped selling latex balloons due to the world wide helium crisis) a lady came in and picked out a balloon and wanted 5 latexes to go with it. I looked at the balloon and asked if she wanted a rainbow. She said no! He was a fifteen year old boy! She wanted latex balloons to match the Mylar.
She picked yellow, red, green, orange, and blue.

Diemen blinked rapidly. Noises were coming from elsewhere in his apartment. Em. That was right.
He levered himself out of bed. A thud echoed down the hallway. Diemen opened the door to Em’s room.
Em sat in the middle of the throw rug with a box of Christmas ornament, which Diemen hadn’t even remembered he owned. Lucky, Em was a gentle child.
So much for his childproofing job.
Diemen picked Em up and with his other hand he set the bulbs back in their box and put the box on the upper self in the closet.
Time for breakfast.
Diemen added clean out the guest room to his list. Em was a pretty content kid, who could keep busy while Diemen cooked as long as Diemen didn’t care what Em played with, which was why Diemen pulled up a chair to silverware drawer and let Em sort the spoons.
Taking a shower was complicated. A high chair would be helpful. It was the number one tip on the single gay dad website he’d visited last night. He hoped to spend some more time at the website today.
He let Em pick out clothes to wear and for the box which Diemen could keep under his desk. And when he got Em and the clothes, plus necessary extras in the car and got to the road, Diemen realized he was actually five minutes earlier than normal.
Traffic wasn’t bad so he arrived before most of the realtors. He greeted Betty, the office assistant, and introduced Em. “My cousin needed a break, so I’m acting parent until Friday.”
Betty grinned and brought her shoulders closer like something out of a fifties teen movie. “Friday? Do you have a date?”
Diemen looked at the floor. Betty’s sharp mind was why nothing could stay a secret in this office. Diemen looked back at her with a smile. “Yes.”
“A big date? With your gorgeous Russian hunk?”
Catherine stopped at the desk. “Every date with a gorgeous Russian hunk is a big date.”
The ladies laughed. Diemen smiled and took his leave. He dropped the box of clothes off at his cubical and carried Em to the playroom. It was still empty. Moms with kids tended to come in after they got their older ones off to school.
Diemen let Em pick out a toy and carry it back to his cubical. Despite being early, Diemen services were already required. The realtor with the funky mouse played with Em as Diemen found a new mouse and replaced it. She asked a lot of questions about Em that Diemen couldn’t answer.
The ladies kept Diemen busy all morning. They all seemed to want to meet and play with Em. Diemen was probably the only person to get any work done.
At lunch he settled Em in with the other children and ate his lunch away from his desk for once.
He called Pavel and was all ready to leave a message, but Pavel picked up. “Hello, I was just going to call you.”
Diemen bit down on the warm flowy feeling those words gave him. “How is your sister?”
“Grumpy.” Pavel laughed. “She’s on complete bed rest for the next month and she’s enjoying making life just as difficult for everyone else. But the baby is still strong and healthy, so all is well.”
“Good to hear. Are we still on for Friday?”
“Yes,” Pavel replied quickly. “I told Masha that she isn’t allowed to go into labor on Friday. She told me if she did it would be my fault.”
And he laughed.
“Speaking of children…”
“Yes?” Pavel’s voice was warm and sweet.
“I’m watching my cousin’s toddler for the week, but only until Friday afternoon.
Diemen was going to have to come up with a pronoun better than whatever Em was dressed as at the moment. Avoiding pronouns was complicating his sentences.
“Too bad,” said Pavel. “I haven’t got to play with a baby since Christmas.”
Diemen smiled. “So you don’t want a night of my uninterrupted attention?”
“If you mean, do I plan to bring an overnight bag to this date of ours, the answer is yes.” Pavel’s voice was so sexy that it left Diemen aching. He had no problem imagining going all the way with Pavel.
He’d been dreaming of it for a while.
“Good. I’ve got to go. Em is stripping.”
Em was down to underwear.
“Then I’ll let you go, very reluctantly. Until Friday.”
“Friday.”
Diemen closed his phone. The mothers grinned at him. He used getting Em new clothes as an excuse to escape.
She picked yellow, red, green, orange, and blue.
