A few weeks ago a woman came by and needed something that that would take a while and she told me she was going to watch. I’m fine with that. As she waited we talked. She offered up the subject of prom. She has a middle school daughter who she says she won’t allow to date. I remember thinking the same thing about my daughter when she was little and my husband even teased her about it. But just teased.

I told her how when my daughter got a boyfriend, just two weeks before prom her junior year, I found out that my sons (both younger) had or had had girlfriends that I hadn’t known about. My older son has dated the same girl since freshman year and my younger one is now dating that girl’s younger sister (I just found this out, weeks after they started going out). I tried to tell the women that she would be the last to know.

She didn’t believe me because she isn’t allowing her daughter to date. I talked to my daughter about this, saying that friends and siblings always knew first (my kids all knew about each other’s significant others). She said, of course, plus if that lady really has band dating, her daughter will never tell her.
