Uninterrupted Part 1

My local independent bookstore (Powell’s) recently got an Espresso Book Machine (print to order), so yesterday when I was downtown I watched a demonstration. The book it made was slick and neat, but I did a quick calculation: To print Are You Together? (525 pages) would cost $29 a copy without taking the $25 set up fee into account or the $1 commission per book they charge for putting your book up for sell. If I wanted to sell my stories, I think it would be cheaper to go eBook.

A Balance of Harmonies: Fires

There have been a couple articles in the news about the drop in grade level of the speeches in the Senate and House from eleventh grade all the way down to tenth. I don’t know what they used to decide the grade levels, but the one Word has uses sentences per paragraph, works per sentence and characters per word. Because my stories are mostly dialogue, my sentences and paragraphs are short. In my random sampling of my stories, I got between a 2.3 and 4.2. The higher grade level the longer the exposition or summary. So I think I’m happy with my “low” score. Stories where nothing happens probably get high ones.
