The Coconut oil in my pantry is solid again. This might not seem like such a big deal, but last week we were without an air conditioner (and one day we were without windows) and the house got so hot that the oil which is normally wax hard was the same consistency as our olive oil. Coconut oil’s melting point is 76°F (24.4°C) and even at night, my house didn’t get much under this. But now the weather’s cooled a bit (under 80° (26.6°) during the day) and even though the house obstinately stays 2° hotter than outside, the coconut oil hasn’t melted again.

I’ve been working so much lately (and being busy on the days I don’t work) that I breathed a sigh of relief over my sparse hours next week. Then I had a mild freak out that getting worse. I can’t survive on 12 hours a week. I can’t even keep my health insurance. So I went and ask the Deli for hours. He’ll have some the week after next. I’ll take what I can get. But he’ll really only need me for holidays and people’s vacations. He is fully staffed.

And I’d look around for other departments, but my manager might be leaving next month, which would mean I’m working forty hour weeks until the store can hire a new floral manager, so even if she doesn’t leave until September I’ll still average 20 hours this quarter. But if she doesn’t leave at all, I’ll be sunk. And my take-home pay from a 12 hour week (after insurance and taxes) will only be about $50 dollars and we need to by a new kind of air conditioner (over $300) to replace the one that we aren’t allowed to use anymore. And it’s still 80°F (26.6°C) outside at 10pm.

So you can win again? )

I am so tired. My next real day off isn’t until Thursday and my last one was a week ago last Monday. I wrote this chapter while talking to my mom who was over for the week.

And for some reason my face feels like it’s burned when I put on sunscreen (to keep it from actually being burned), I’ve tried several different kinds now and the least painful one just makes my eyes water like I’ve been exposed to fumes. So I went out to buy a lotion with sunscreen, in hopes that would be gentler and I had the chose between a gentle one and one used to treat redness. I didn’t have any redness, so I bought the slightly cheaper one. Only this morning in my shower I used my face wash like I’ve used hundreds of times before and my face burned and has continued to hurt more than fifteen hours later. And my cheeks are red.

When I got home from work, I put on the new lotion on one side of my face, just in case it hurt me too, which it did, but oddly the lotioned side hurt less (but still hurt) a half an hour later. So I guess I should have bought the slightly more expensive stuff. Only I don’t want to go back and buy the other bottle. This stuff already cost twice as much as sunscreen. That would be like doubling the price again. And I’m not sure it would soothe anything. Plus I should be saving up for a standing air conditioner. The apartment is getting new windows next month and window a/c units void the windows’ warranty. Just in time for the hottest months of the year.

Last week, I spent Monday doing all the stuff that needed to get done, so I could write on Tuesday with no interruptions. Only one of the things I did on Monday was make an appointment, which turned out to be on Tuesday. And with an hour plus commute each way, I wasn’t going to be well after noon. But I still had Thursday.

Only I didn’t end up having Thursday off. Or Friday morning. And today my son graduates, tomorrow we have a Mother’s Day/double birthday/graduation party. Then my mom comes to visit for a week that I’ll be working twice as many hours as I expected. Then my kids are out of school. And this is all I’ve written of Harmonies. When am I going to find the time?

I saw Iron Man 3 for my daughter’s birthday. I don’t think these are spoilers: There were only three trailers before the movie and then the red Marvel screen flashed (just like it had for Thor and Wolverine) and Tony Stark talked over a black screen. The opening credits rolled at the end. And the after credits scene was Tony being Tony and explains why the story was told the way it was. A lot of fun all around.

I read an article on how to work more efficiently. 90 min is as long as the brain can really take doing the same thing before it needs a break. Three 90 min blocks of work can get more done, better, than working straight through. So I thought I’d try it.

My first day was Memorial Day with my house full of people. I got the first 90 min block completed (just as I was starting to flag, so I think the numbers work) then I had other stuff to do. I tried it again on Tuesday, when I wasn’t feeling well. I got a lot done, but only managed two of the 90 min blocks. I wanted to try all three. I thought I’d use one for Harmonies, one for editing the Bluebeard and posting it, and one for reworking Gestures or working on the sequel.

My daughter leaves just before 10, so I got all ready, set a timer and got to work reading the chapter up to where I’d quit last time, but before I got a single word written my mother called, almost in tears. It was about my sister. Again. Two hours later I’d talked her down. At least I got a little writing done later.

And the kids will all be out of school for the summer soon. I may have to try this again in September. Uninterrupted minutes don’t exist when children are present, even if they are all teenagers.

I’m working on a Bluebeard-like tale at the moment because I don’t think I’ve ever seen it done fluffy (I hated this story as a kid) and I was explaining the dynamic between the brothers to my daughter and she said they were Thor and Loki, which would make the main character Balder.

In researching for the story, I found out that the most popular (French) version is the only one the main character has to be rescued in. In all the other, older ones, she rescues herself and her older sisters by her wits. Now, that sounds more like a Fairy Tale.

I’m exhausted and I haven’t even started the two crazy weeks between now and Mother’s Day. One of our helpers is on vacation for the next three weeks and another leaves the Friday before Mother’s Day and the third is needed as a checker for several of the days, so this years it mostly just going to be me and my manager. We won’t even have anyone to cover our lunches on the Saturday before (which is also prom) since she arrives at 6am and someone (and I’m the only one left) has to stick around until 9pm. That day would be so much nicer with five people in the department.

I think I’m going to have to rework Gestures to add more of Colt’s attraction to his two hunks. This read-through (tenth, maybe dozenth in the last few months) I’ve caught all sorts of mistakes (I’ve spelled the planet’s language in several different ways) and places where I need to add feelings and what Colt eyes are lingering over and I’m only at page 40 of 99. I’ve also just realize that both Orion and Python are men who can do anything they put their minds to, which is quite the turn-on for Colt. Maybe he just loves Lion for his body.

But I think I’ve discovered some of these because I had to solidify things in my head for the sequel (like what the Port looked like), so I wonder if I shouldn’t spend some quality time finishing it up and then hit the first story again.

This is basically what it looks like. The arrows are sliding doors. The row of arrows points to where the shouji doors will be when they are all together (maybe within their own cubby in the wall). I did realize that I've got the balcony off Peregrine's studio facing the wrong direction. It should be east, overlooking the street, not north over the armory. Peregrine wants to see people. Actually, I think that's the way it is on the building I modeled theirs after. Only the forth floor where the stone balcony was (and no longer is—Did I dream it?) doesn't have all these extra balconies like all the floors above have. But since I have no need to be exact, I'm going to make it my way.

Their place is huge. I could fit my entire apartment in there three times with space left over (look how tiny the king sized bed looks in their bedroom). I feel almost guilty giving them so much space. By since this is a fantasy condo...

New Condo

The kitchen has an island and I'm not sure where the door between the guest bedroom and it's bathroom is and the place might not look so huge if I drew furniture, but I think I should spend that time writing.

I spent the day writing (and finishing!) the second part of Claimed. I'm in the weird part of this cold, where I can breath and I'm no longer hacking up lungs (although the cartilage on my ribs is still inflamed, so it hurts to breath) and I don't feel all that bad any more, but I get dizzy when I stand up for too long. I have an eight hour shift tomorrow. I'll just have to see how that goes.

It’s not even nine and I’m dead on my feet. I’ve been working way too much for way too many weeks in a row (will way too many more to come). And on my day off I wrote a version of Rumpelstiltskin instead of working on Harmonies. I haven’t filled in the blanks for the what-you're-reading on this chapter, but I can’t put off posting it (sometimes I hate self-imposed deadlines).
